PROFILE SUMMARY
HERMINIO ABADE
Working at the Agricultural Research Institute
of Mozambique (IIAM), since 2004, Herminio Abade holds a master's degree
in plant breeding from the University of Malawi and a bachelor’s degree in
Agronomy (Crop production and protection option), from Eduardo Mondlane
University. The titles were enriched with many training among them, Biometrics
and agricultural experimentation, Conducting a baseline study, Advanced
techniques of Rice Production, Advanced Rice Breeding Techniques, Sustainable
Rice Production, Breeding Management System, Advanced techniques of
Multiplication early generation seed (EGS), Breeding Programa Modernization,
Breeding Management System (BMS) Financial Planning and other areas in
different countries, including Mozambique, Malawi, Kenya, Uganda, Philippines,
Vietnam, South Korea, Canada, India, Ghana, Zimbabwe and others. He is currently
the Manager of the Research Centre of Leadership for Rice, in Namacurra,
Zambezia Province, in Mozambique. He was the Principal Investigator of the
project “Development of improved rice varieties”, a project under APPSA, funded
by World Bank and implemented in Mozambique and Zambia (crosses, evaluation,
selection and description of lines for submission to release), and Co-principal
investigator of the project “Participatory evaluation and selection of
varieties of rice to increase productivity”, a project implemented in Malawi,
Mozambique and Zambia. He is currently
the principal of the project ” Development and commercialization of climate-smart and
nutrition-dense rice varieties“. He was the provincial coordinator in
the research and technology transfer component of the small-scale irrigation
project (SSIP), funded by African Development Bank and implemented in Zambezia
Province. He taught the discipline of plant breeding at the Zambezi University
(Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering) and University of Licungo
(Faculty of Agronomy and Animal Sciences). He tough also seed production
technology at University of Licungo (Faculty of Agronomy and Animal Sciences)
and Statistics at Mussa Bin Bique University. He provided training on rice production
techniques and seed production technologies to extension technicians and
farmers. Herminio Abade, published 5 scientific articles in renowned
international journals. In addition to the excellent results in his research
work, he also stands out for the detail and determination shown in the
leadership of research teams that culminated in the generation of various
technologies for rice production systems, including the release of 4 (four)
high-yielding rice varieties for lowland rainfed and irrigated ecosystems.
